    Глагол играть передается английскими play, play on, play at, play with, которые не являются взаимозаменяемыми. Русскому переходному глаголу играть ( например, об исполнении музыкального произведения и пр.) соответствует английский переходный глагол play: to play Mozart. Русское играть на чем-л. (об игре на музыкальном инструменте) и играть во что-л. (о спортивных, азартных и детских играх) также передается английским переходным глаголом play: играть на скрипке – to play the violin, играть в футбол – to play football, играть в карты – to play cards, играть в прятки – to play hide-and-seek. Однако в тех случаях, когда упоминается исполняемое произведение, перед названием музыкального инструмента ставится предлог on: to play Chopin on the piano, to play Kabalevsky on the violin. В значении 'играть на сцене, исполнять роль' также употребляется переходный глагол play: to play the leading part, to play Hamlet. Play at употребляется в современном языке, когда речь идет о детских играх, не имеющих установленных правил и основанных целиком на фантазии играющих: to play at being soldiers, to play at keeping house (play at означает в подобных случаях 'притворяться, изображая собой кого-л. ради забавы'). Русскому играть с чем-л. (в прямом значении, а также в значении 'шутить, обращаться легкомысленно, несерьезно') соответствует английское play with: to play with the cat, to play with someone's affections.
